Helping Energy Producers Navigate Emerging Sustainability Issues in Complex Stakeholder Environments

RESEARCH
06.15.2026

STATE OF PLAY

As concerns about sustainability and energy infrastructure grew in states with a large energy sector, industry leaders realized that technical expertise alone wouldn't improve public trust. New challenges, such as water management at energy sites, gained more public focus, risking misinformation, stakeholder doubt, and tighter regulation.

Consequently, a Fortune 500 energy producer needed to understand how diverse audiences perceive sustainability issues and the trade-offs of potential solutions before public opinion hardened. Rather than reacting to criticism, leadership sought to shape the conversation through clear, credible communications informed by stakeholder insights.

ACTION

Narrative designed and led an accelerated, multi-state qualitative research program to identify the messages most likely to build trust on a technically complex issue. The engagement brought together nearly 100 stakeholders, including voters, landowners, civic leaders, tribal representatives, NGOs, academics, policy influencers, and state policymakers, creating one of the region's most comprehensive stakeholder intelligence efforts.

Rather than simply evaluating existing communications, the research examined how different audiences interpreted the issue, identified where information gaps existed, and assessed which narratives could withstand scrutiny across stakeholder groups. By producing and testing four short concept videos informed by companies’ messaging, the research distilled the most important updates into a compelling, clear, and less technical story. Through iterative testing and qualitative exploration, the team uncovered a defining insight: there was a significant window to build trust through proactive, plain-spoken communication before opposition narratives defined the conversation.

The research also identified the characteristics of the most credible messaging. Stakeholders consistently responded positively to communications grounded in tangible progress, practical partnerships, and transparent explanations, while rejecting technical jargon and abstract sustainability claims.

IMPACT

The findings transformed the overall approach from reactive reputation management to proactive stakeholder engagement. Narrative translated the research into a comprehensive messaging toolkit that equipped communicators and leadership with validated guidance for ongoing engagement and potential crisis scenarios.

More importantly, the work gave leaders greater confidence in navigating one of the energy industry's most visible emerging issues. By replacing assumptions with stakeholder intelligence, companies can communicate more credibly to diverse audiences, strengthen trust, and lay a foundation for future dialogue on sustainability and infrastructure.
