Building a National Brand From the Ground Up

BRANDING, EARNED MEDIA, CONTENT DEVELOPMENT, MESSAGE DEVELOPMENT

STATE OF PLAY

The Foundation for Energy Security and Innovation (FESI) is the 13th congressionally chartered nonprofit and the official charitable partner of the Department of Energy. Its mission is to connect DOE-funded research with private-sector commercialization — addressing the funding gap where promising energy technologies typically stall. When FESI engaged Narrative, the organization had only a two-person staff, no visual identity, and no established message framework.

The political environment added to the challenge: energy policy had grown more partisan, and FESI needed to demonstrate its value to audiences on both sides of the aisle, including appropriators who would influence its future funding.

ACTION

Narrative built FESI’s communications infrastructure from the ground up. This included a complete visual identity — logo, brand guide, and style sheet — along with a messaging playbook defining how FESI should communicate its role to policymakers, industry partners, and the media. We scoped and launched website development, established FESI's social media presence, and developed a targeted press list to support the CEO's transition into a national-facing role.

IMPACT

FESI began our engagement without a defined public identity. Narrative built the brand, messaging, and digital foundation needed to engage Congress, pursue private investment, and operate credibly at a national level.
