What’s it like to be an intern at Narrative Strategies? We sat down with Sydney Phillips, one of our all-star interns this semester, and asked her about her experience as a member of the team. She told us what she’s learned so far, advice she has for future interns, and more!
What do you do as an intern at Narrative Strategies?
As an intern at Narrative, I’m responsible for a wide range of tasks including compiling press clips, drafting op-eds, pitching to reporters, and creating social media copy.
Before working at Narrative Strategies, what was the most unusual or interesting job you have had?
Prior to joining Narrative, I worked in museum studies and exhibit curation at the Church-Waddel-Brumby House Museum in Athens, Georgia. I spent almost a year researching and creating an exhibit showcasing African-American history in Athens.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I’ve never had a boring day at Narrative Strategies. I love to be challenged and to be pushed in new ways, so the fact that there’s always something new and exciting to do or learn is my favorite part of working here.
What do you find most challenging?
Often times when I’m asked to draft social media copy, press releases, or op-eds, I’m writing about a specific issue that I’m not particularly familiar with. The hardest part of the job is trying to educate myself on current events or new legislation so that I understand my subject before I start writing. Though it can be difficult, doing background research makes me more educated on a wide range of subjects I never would have encountered if it weren’t for these assignments.
What are three things you have learned during your internship program so far?
Tech! I didn’t anticipate this in the beginning of my internship, but I’ve become a little more tech savvy and learned how to use different databases to make my life easier when compiling press lists or researching proposed legislation on the Hill.
Writing! Since working at Narrative, I’ve learned to write in a number of different mediums for a wide range of platforms and I get amazing feedback from our associates and managers, all of which has made me a much better writer.
Industry Tips! I majored in public relations at the University of Georgia and, while it prepared me with all of the theoretical knowledge I’d need for this internship, it couldn’t have prepared me for the day-to-day of the job. Narrative has taught me the ins and outs of the communications industry and what it’s like to work at a firm like ours.
What advice do you have for future interns at Narrative?
When I first got to Narrative, something that I heard often from leadership was “stay hungry, humble, and kind.” That’s something that’s stuck with me and something I try to embody every day I step into the office. I would advise any intern to take those words to heart — work your hardest and do it with a great attitude.
What are three words you would use to describe Narrative?
Dynamic. Collaborative. Capable.
What has been your favorite project or task during your internship so far?
I love event coverage assignments! I always volunteer to watch congressional hearings or public events for clients because I love getting an inside look into policy, current events, and social issues — whether it be proposed tax reforms or content moderation on the internet.
What are your favorite spots/things to do in the DC area for fun?
My roommates and I are huge fans of Navy Yard! We go for a run by the water every morning and frequent Circa and La Famosa for some of the best food in D.C.
