Embracing the Transformative Power of Patient Advocacy

Embracing the Transformative Power of Patient Advocacy

Patient advocacy is a crucial pillar of any public affairs campaign within the biopharmaceutical realm. However, for me and countless others, it represents more than just a strategic tool; it is a profoundly personal platform for effecting tangible change. For more than two decades, I’ve lived with type 1 diabetes. I’ve navigated the intricate healthcare system and, in doing so, discovered my voice as a seasoned advocate. Witnessing the impact of my diagnosis story on the Senators attending a briefing where I advocated for a multi-year renewal of the Special Diabetes Program has reinforced my belief in the power of advocacy to drive real change.

Becoming an integral part of the diabetes community has given me unprecedented opportunities to immerse myself in the broader advocacy world. I’ve stood alongside numerous patient communities in the corridors of Congress, fighting alongside them in their respective battles. Everyone carries their unique struggle, infused with the hope that our elected officials will contribute to creating a healthier world. These stories now form an essential part of my work at Narrative Strategies and propel our specialty Health Alliance Network.

Integrating my passion into my career has been a defining moment, and I am eager to inspire others to unlock the full potential of patient advocacy through authentic and purposeful means. As you embark on this journey or find yourself in need of assistance, remember the following:

  • Trust is the cornerstone of every relationship. Establishing trust among diverse communities is critical. By actively working alongside them, whether advocating for right-to-try initiatives for pediatric oncology patients, pushing for open access to innovative kidney treatments, or raising awareness for rare diseases, I have directly engaged with fellow patient advocates entrenched in deeply personal battles. This trust forms the bedrock for bridging gaps and fostering genuine connections with our biopharmaceutical clients.

  • Two-way communication is crucial. Open communication and transparency lay the groundwork for effective patient advocacy initiatives. Engaging in two-way dialogues, articulating goals and intentions, and addressing potential conflicts of interest are paramount. Industry partners who actively listen and respond to the advocacy community’s needs and concerns demonstrate a sincere commitment to engagement, setting the stage for fruitful collaboration and fostering enduring relationships for future endeavors.

  • The landscape is intricate; experience is invaluable. Extensive advocacy relationships and a deep understanding of the complicated landscape have driven numerous successful patient advocacy campaigns, including:

      • Enhancing Access to Complex Generics: Our engagement encompassed convening stakeholders such as policymakers, regulators, patients, media, and industry groups for a policy briefing unveiling a whitepaper spotlighting the access challenges faced by patient communities. This culminated in a patient educational briefing that empowered advocates with messaging and potential policy solutions. Subsequently, the formation of the first-ever patient advocacy group focused on access to generic medicines materialized, eventually shaping the reauthorization of Generic Drug User Fee Amendments III and establishing an ongoing relationship with the FDA’s Office of Generic Drugs.

      • Championing Coverage Change in Kidney Care: We organized a media event to address coverage issues associated with innovative kidney disease treatment. The event concentrated on patient-centric solutions and featured notable speakers from Congress. As a result, this event galvanized kidney advocates and led to a sign-on letter to CMS advocating for less restrictive policies. Furthermore, advocates had the opportunity to publish op-eds in key trade publications. These endeavors resulted in CMS policy changes and prompted private insurers to reconsider coverage terms.

The biopharmaceutical industry presents remarkable opportunities for collaboration with advocates to shape discourse and influence policymaking through genuine engagement and shared objectives. It’s not merely a transactional arrangement but one cultivated through personalizing the issues and making them tangible and relatable.

Fostering lasting relationships demands more than passion; it necessitates strategy, transparency, and a sincere commitment to change. It’s about cultivating relationships grounded in trust, empathy, and a collective vision for a brighter future. Ultimately, advocacy isn’t just about creating a buzz; it’s about effecting meaningful change.
